Dear Dr. Marcus,
As you are aware, I have been a chronic pain patient suffering from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome for most of my life. Due to joint instability in my shoulders and knees, I have suffered from significant muscle pain that was initially treated by utilizing trigger point injections. Although these injections were helpful in relieving the tightness around various muscle groups, the pain would often return (after about one week) when my shoulder joint would become unstable. The purpose of my letter is to articulate the benefits I have received over the last two years in your utilization of laser treatment therapy compared to trigger point injections.
First and foremost, laser treatment has been a godsend in my overall pain treatment. The major difference between the two treatments is that laser therapy relieves muscle pain for a longer duration (approximately three to four weeks). The treatment itself “feels” as if my muscles are being bathed with a warm blanket compared to the injections. I have found that more muscle groups around my unstable shoulder joints benefit from the laser treatment. In particular, when my shoulder joint would become unstable after the conclusion of the laser treatment, tightness in surrounding muscles is not as severe, allowing me to benefit from “range of motion” exercises.” For me, laser therapy is not as intrusive (painful) when initially performed and seems to be a more “gentle” treatment in lessening muscle tightness.
Although I am not an expert on the physiology of muscles, or how the laser seems to break up what I can only describe as “adhesions” that pulsate and burn, this treatment has been a major success. By utilizing the laser, I estimate that my pain has been reduced by as much as 20% – 30% in comparison to trigger point treatments. I have one further observation that is important to note. As I have discussed with you on numerous occasions, while using trigger point injections, muscle tightness would return much more quickly. In comparison, I can feel a more gradual tightening in my muscles which “signals” to me that I need another round of laser treatments. I realize that the degree of my joint instability over a given month impacts how my muscles feel, I know that I could not do without this treatment.
Please feel free to pass on my observations to the manufacturer of this incredible device. I will be forever indebted to your expertise and the inclusion of laser treatment on treating my chronic pain. My “quality of life” has been dramatically improved since the onset of treatment.
