Signalment: Canine, 9yrs., F/S, Standard Poodle, “Obi”.
History: Hyporexia progressing to anorexia. Recent ingestion of crab shells and vomiting. Weigh loss, cachexia, and lethargy were actively progressing.
Diagnosis and Exam Findings: Ultrasound and bloodwork revealed nonspecific hepatitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Liver aspirate confirms there is no evidence of neoplasia or severe infection.
Laser Treatment: 8J/cm2 delivered to the caudal thorax and anterior abdominal area surrounding the liver, delivered a total of 4320 joules.
Frequency of Treatments: Every 2 to 4 days for a total number of 12 treatments in a 30 day period.
Other Treatments Included: Standard of care, including appetite stimulant, diuretic, liver support, steroid.
Comments: Appetite resumed by the third laser treatment. An elevated ALT value was noted between the third and fourth laser treatment, but then decreased by the eighth laser treatment. Increased activity, as well as resuming historical behaviors and weight normalization resumed as the therapy was carried out.
